For thousands of years, people have used tattoos as an artistic expression of their personality, or life experience, or faith, or group membership, or a status symbol, or an adjunct to reconstructive surgery, and many more reasons. Over 39 million people in North America have tattoos. That’s roughly one in seven people.

Everyone Has a Story

Tattoos often carry deep personal meaning, and the stories behind them are almost always fascinating and worth hearing. In fact, everyone has a valuable story. Sometimes, tattoos are a unique way people express a part of theirs. We’re fortunate to hear these stories through their tattoos.

We extend a BIG THANK YOU to all of you who participated in this project and took the time to share your story with us all.

My name is Kevin Gourley. I am a pro photographer in Austin, TX (www.KevinGourley.com). I have always found people’s tattoo stories fascinating, so I decided to start this project to photograph various people and their tattoos, and offer an opportunity to tell their tattoo story. We’re doing this, initially, in the form of an online gallery (via this website).

We have just about completed our first phase of this project with the (almost) completion of this website.

Our next step will an exhibit we’re working on for possibly Spring 2026. Stay tuned for more details.
After that, we have more ideas about next steps in celebrating people and their tattoos!
